For years this port was just a sleepy fishing village. Then in the 50s the Meridanos started building summer homes along the coast to escape from the scalding heat of tropical Merida during July and August. They also used these retreats for two weeks at Easter. In the late 60s Americans and Canadians discovered Progreso as a winter paradise, enticed by the warm weather, dirt-cheap rents, friendly Yucatecan people, the laid-back way of life and the safe atmosphere.
