Progreso
is situated
only 40 km (35 minutes
drive) from
Merida,
the capital city of the
State of Yucatan,
by the federal highway 261.
For years this port was just a sleepy fishing village.
Then in the 50s the Meridanos started building summer homes along the coast
to escape from the scalding heat of tropical Merida during July and August.
They also used these retreats for two weeks at Easter. In the late 60s
Americans and Canadians discovered Progreso as a winter paradise, enticed by
the warm weather, dirt-cheap rents, friendly Yucatecan people, the laid-back
way of life and the safe atmosphere.

Today
you will find Progreso to be a bustling town of some 25,000 people. Fancy
restaurants are springing up along the seaside promenade "El Malecon",
facades are being painted quaint colors, and the people are trying hard to
improve their services.
The 6-km-long pier has made Progreso
the key shipping location for exports, and thus the most
important Yucatan port.

Progreso
is a beautiful port with wonderful beaches of gentle waves which make it
ideal for swimming, boat races and sailing. Fishing and tourism are Progreso
inhabitants' most important activities.
In Progreso you will find a large grocery
store, a large typical market, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, police
station, bus station, post and telegraph offices, handicraft stores, taxis,
money exchange, real estate info, hardware store, pharmacies, bakeries, etc.

Located near Progreso are the Alacranes reef and Perez
Island. Two of the island's beaches are Chelem and Yucaltepen, characterized
by their fine sand and gentle waves.
Visitors to Progreso are wrapped in its special
atmosphere, enjoying the Malecon, the brilliant sunsets, as well as its
exquisite food.
