The beautiful city of Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan and is a place full of color, culture and history.
Founded on January 6th, 1542 by Don Francisco de Montejo, the city was built on the exact same site as the ancient Mayan city of
T'ho - meaning "place of five hills" in the Yucatecan Mayan language.

The main square is surrounded by history and beautiful colonial buildings, the most famous of which is the the Cathedral of Saint Ildefonso which is the oldest cathedral in entire mainland Mexico. The town hall dates back to 17th century and founded Francisco de Montejo's house features two ornate porticos,
one of which narrates the life of the conqueror himself. The house of government features Doric and Tuscan architecture and different chapters of Mexican and Yucatecan history are illustrated in an elaborate metal engraving by Don Fernando Castro Pacheco.
The main square also boasts a variety or arcades and open-air cafes and restaurants offering a welcome fruit cocktail or cold Yucatecan beer for the visitor.

Constructed in 1904, the Paseo de Montejo is Merida's grandest boulevard. Here in the city's golden age the rich landowners whose fortunes had been made with enormous sisal plantations built the mansions. The boulevard is also home to an extraordinary monument featuring ancient Mayan designs and historical motifs, which was carved by the famous Colombian sculptor Don Romulo Rozo.

Merida's colonial hearts bears witness to both the city's rich history and its vibrant present.
