from Merida, Mexico

Becal was once
the territory of the Mayas from Campeche. There are no huge Pyramids
but many pre Colombian artifacts and Maya Pyramid remains have been
found in the surroundings. Is a clean and quiet town with
nearly no motor cehicles and is distinguished for Panama hats make
from a tender young palm leaf known as Jipi Japa. The ladies that
weave these Jipi Japa items do their work down in damp caves beneath
the city where their materials will not dry out while they are being
worked on and they invite visitors. San Francisco de Campeche is
famous for being one of the few Walled Cities of America and unique
one in Mexico. Conserve in excellent state its historical patrimony.
Jhon L. Stephens and Frederik Catherwood visited the cave ad
published two drawings of the cave. The Maya occupiedd the cave from
2000 BC to 1000 BC, it was used for water supply. The guide tells
the visitors the legends that gives the cave it's name.
