Celestun
is located 96
kms southwest of
Merida in the
State of Yucatan, Mexico. Its a typical fishing village
considered an ecotourism paradise, famous for its ria, beautiful flamingo colonies,
freshwater springs and beaches.
The exceptional landscape of
the Celestun Estuary, located on the West Coast of Yucatan, is part of the
World patrimony, of the Biosphere Reserve by the same name, in 1979, this 21
km, long region that covers a surface of 59,139 hectares has been officially
declared fauna shelter.
Among its main attractions that can be
visited by boat tours, we find the Baldiosera
spring - where you can swim or scuba dive -, the Cambay spring - a beautiful fresh water pool - and
the quiet Flamingoes Lagoon,
known as "The
Drum". To the east, in the
direction of
the "Sand Island", final destination of
our tour there is the
"Real de Salinas" Ranch, an old salt plant, the extraordinary "Tampeten"
petrified forest and Punta Ninum, rich in clams and baby shrimps.
The
banks of the coastal lagoon harbor fauna and flora of exceptional beauty:
ducks coming from Canada in the months of December and March, a large
variety of fish, pelicans, herons, albatross and other aquatic birds living
in an ecosystem of low deciduous forest and tropical undergrowth. This
region boasts 234 mammal species, among which the ocelot, the jaguar and the
spider monkey, considered endangered species, as well as three species of
sea turtle (green, carey and caguama) and two of crocodile.
The
Caribbean Flamingoes, also called Pink Flamingoes, that live in the Estuary,
represent the main attraction of the region and form the only flamingo
settlement known in North America. From the boat tour, leaving at convenient
times from the dock in front of the Culture Building, you will be able to
observe the flamingoes in their natural ecosystem. After the tour you can
enjoy a delicious meal in one of the many seafood restaurants along the
beach of Celestun.
