Sonora State is located in the northwest region of the Mexican Republic, and with its 182,052 km² is the second State in territorial extension of Mexico.

Within the jurisdiction of the State of Sonora are also important islands as those of Tiburón (Shark), Pelicano (Pelican) and San Esteban. Its political division compose it 565 municipalities with a population of approximately 2'216,969 inhabitants.

The State of Sonora is located between 27º 18' and 32º 29' of north latitude and 108º 14' of length west and limits to the northwest with the State of Baja California, to the north with USA, to the east with the State of Chihuahua, to the south with the State of Sinaloa and to the west with the California Gulf.

The State of Sonora has beautiful beaches that are extended throughout 900 km., some of they virgin, other that they offer to the facilities visitor to practice aquatic sports, as diving, fishing, sail, etc. Furthermore, the dammings of the rivers, offer also opportunity to fish. In the preys of the Angostura, the Novillo and the Ovachic, the tourist finds varieties as lobina, bagre and mojarra.

In Sonora vast coastal, it can be participated in an international fishing tilt or well, to enjoy product of the sport the fishing.
Its soft and vast beaches are sunny all year round. Puerto Peñasco (Port Cliff), Bahía Kino (Bay Kino), Puerto Lobos (Port Wolves) and San Carlos, they are ideal places to enjoy the life sea.

The fans to the hunt, find also opportunities to achieve valuable kinds, within the authorized eras, of deer, boar, duck and other more.

The State of Sonora name derived from the word opata "Xunuta", indirect complement from "Xunut" (Sonot) corn and means
"In the corn" or "Place of the corn". The Indians opatas of the region of the Sonora river, they were called therefore Sonoras.
This confirms it the historian Francisco R. Aldama, author of the History Dictionary, Geography and Bibliography Sonorenses,
who supports that the voice Sonora that corresponds to the state, it was the name of one of the ancient indigenous tribes that
were inhabiting in the current territory. This denomination is impulse in fact in 1648, instead of New Andalusia, name consider the Spanish General Pedro de la Perea.

Due to the numerous sees existence, the climate is assorted. In the beaches is presented a climate that is going of the warm to semi warm dry, with an average of 23º C. In the north, the climate is tempered and semi dry, with mean temperature of 19º C., in the plains and of 14º in the saw. Toward the low part of the state, the climate varies between temperate and warm and the temperature oscillates between 20º C to 14º C., depending on the region.
