.Peñamiller is found along Highway 120, San Juan del Rio - Xilitla in the Sierra Gorda , in the northeast part of the state, 78 Miles from the city of Queretaro. The climates is dry with occasional rain, and is 4462 ft above sea level.

The village of Santa Maria de Peñamiller consisted of 37 families when it was founded on the 14th of December, 1748. It was part of the Toliman district until 1941, when it was named a city by then governor Noradino Rubio.

Tourist attractions:

• San Miguel Palmas Temple,  This Temple was founded by Dominican monks. Today it stands on the banks of the river Xichu-Extoraz, surrounded by stately cactus up to 26 ft tall. It is found 18 Miles from Peñamiller's town hall.

• El Paraiso Canyon, The memorable feature of this natural canyon is the black marble walls. During some seasons, navigation and fishing is possible on these waters passing trough the canyon from the Rio Extoraz.

• Agua Fria Rocks, Within a diameter of 1640 ft exist a series of monolithic rocks, each appearing to have perfectly cut lines and edges.

Festivities:

• Pecan Hunt Contest, Every year in September, the town sets out on a big nut hunt. Villagers gather the biggest crop of mature pecans they can.

• Celebration in honor to Santa Maria de la Asuncion, A big celebration takes place on the eve of the feast day of Santa Maria de la Asuncion every August, with fireworks, cultural events and a great artesan and food fair.
