The charming island of Isla Mujeres is located 10 km northwest of Cancun and mainland in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico. This small island lying in the State of Quintana Roo, was discovered in 1517 by Spanish navigators who christened it Isla Mujeres (Island of the Women) because of the pre-Hispanic figures in the shape of women discovered on the island.
The 17th. of August celebrates every year the foundation of Isla Mujeres (1854). A bronze cross weighing approx. one ton. 30 feet in height and 9-3/4 feet wide was planted into the sea in the reef called "Manchones" between Isla Mujeres and the coastline in 1994. The "Cross of the Bay" is a tribute to all the men and women who died by the sea. You can visit it. Also found on Isla Mujeres are Maya vestiges and constructions built by pirates, contrasting with modern hotels. Isla Mujeres local artisans sell handicrafts made with pink sea shells. The traditional dish is called Tikin Chik (roasted fish) Located 7 km north of Isla Mujeres is The Contoy Island, a National Park where you can observe a great variety of migratory birds such as:
