Discurso de Cortes a sus soldados antes de emprender la Conquista de Mexico.

 Cuando considero, amigos y compañeros míos, como nos ha juntado en esta isla nuestra felicidad, cuantos estorbos y persecuciones dejamos atrás, y como se nos han deshecho las dificultades, conozco la mano de dios, en esta obra que emprendemos, y entiendo que en su altísima providencia… lo mismo favorecer los principios que prometer lo… Su causa nos lleva. La de nuestro Rey que… es suya, a conquistar regiones, no conocidas, y ella… volverá por si, mirando por nosotros. No es mi animo… la empresa que acometemos combates nos serán sangrientos, facciones increíbles, batallas desiguales en que habréis menester socorreros en todo vuestro…  miserias de la necesidad, inclemencia del tiempo, perezas de la tierra, en que os será necesario el sufrimiento, que es el segundo valor de los hombres y tan hijo del corazón como el primero, que en las guerras sirve mas la paciencia que las manos. Hechos estáis a padecer y hechos a pelar en esas ideas que dejáis conquistadas mayor es nuestra empresa y debes ir prevenidos de mayor  osadía que siempre son las dificultades del tamaño de los intentos. Todos somos, pero la unión multiplica los ejércitos y en nuestra conformidad esta nuestra mayor fortaleza; uno amigos míos, ha de ser el consejo en cuanto se resolviere; una la mano de la ejecución; común la utilidad y común la gloria en lo que conquistare. Del valor de cualquiera de nosotros se ha de fabricar y componer la seguridad de todos. Vuestro caudillo soy, y seré el primero en aventurar la vida por el menor de los soldados. Más tendréis que obedecer en mi ejemplo que en mis órdenes; y puedo asegurarles de mí, que me basta el ánimo a conquistar el mundo entero. Aun me lo promete el corazón con no se que movimiento extraordinario, que suele ser el mejor de los presagios. Así, pues, a convertir en obras las palabras, y no os parezca temeridad esta confianza mía pues se funda en que os tengo a mi lado…
