It was in 1886 when this town was established as a village remembering the liberator Miguel Hidalgo. In many aspects this town, dedicated to livestock and agriculture (melon, watermelon, corn, beans) cal attention through. The shore of the Rio Bravo with its thatched roof huts and grills, the dam in Hidalgo II, its rodeo seasons, its ranch festivals, its busy hunting ranches. There is so much to admire and enjoy, but without a doubt, the largest event that brings the greatest recognition to Hidalgo is called cabalgata grande; horseback riders “United in Our Traditions.” Beginning in 2001 in a display of unity, the governors of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas participated together with the President of Mexico, Vincente Fox. They rode for a distance of 49 kilometers (30.5 miles) from Hidalgo to Nuevo Loredo, Tamaulipas. Carried out during the month of March and with the zeal of reaffirming the brotherhood of the region’s towns, year after year the number of riders increases. It is anticipated that the number of riders for the 2005 event will increase by an additional 10,000.
