Founded
in 1674, the name of this municipality comes from the Portuguese explorer
Gaspar Castaño de Sosa, who started his exploration of this area in 1582. To
speak of Castaños immediately takes us to the transcendental passages of our
history. La Reforma and the French Intervention make us realize the
important role that Cornel Ildefonso Fuentes held with his glorious Riflemen
Reginien of Monclova. He was born in 1829 in what was outside the old
Castaño Hacienda, and his image has remained recorded in the shield of the
municipality in recognition of his courage.
The ill-fated pages
that were written in 1811 with the capture of Miguel Hidalgo and his
insurgents in Acatita de Baján, 30 km (19 miles) from the seat of the
municipality, also deserve mentioning.
